The stories we tell, the images we paint, the shared history we conjure to frame the present moment: behind each personal narrative and social evolution is lore – waiting to be encoded by words, brushes, cameras, code, and more.
TENDER is showcasing explorations of such mythologies, cultural narratives, visual archetypes, and fictional symbology by seven artists at Untitled Art 2024 – each with a new series of works using generative algorithms and artificial intelligence to share a part of their world that will live on as lore.
These projects portray subjects like abstracted technologies, personal transformations, and referential vernacular in ways that traverse visual genre: painterly figuration, algorithmic illustration, post photography, material collage, and minimal mathematical art. This range in work is unified by the richness that the show's theme invites, each series bringing a sense of familiarity that reveals something completely new – where stories harken to centuries past and future, like an old soul you’ve just met or a rekindled relationship after long silence.
At Untitled this year, the theme of the fair is “East Meets West” and given the influences and backgrounds of the artists shown in Lore, a natural emphasis has emerged on the contrasts and convergences of mythologies found in eastern and western cultures. This interplay comes from western artists whose projects examine eastern influences, the reinterpretation of both contemporary and ancient cultural iconography, and artists expressing the undeniably global nature of our contemporary culture.
Here Lore exhibits renewed evidence of ancient tablets, distortions of contemporary reality, abstracted fabrics of heritage, and expressions of a surrealist future – all in exquisite physical formats for each new series.
