As one of the earliest projects on fxhash, SMOLSKULL is a rare example of a profile picture (PFP) project that is also fully generative — meaning it was purely created with code. The project’s entirely generative nature gives off a simple vibe that says, “We like the art.”

As fxhash project #14, SMOLSKULL minted slowly over the course of a few weeks. That pace gave early collectors the chance to mint a SMOLKSULL before the final 500 suddenly minted out within hours.

The SMOLSKULL aficionado’s attitude is to choose aesthetics over rarity. Pick a color, find an expression you like, and go for it. Skulls (as they’re affectionately known)represent everything great about fxhash: pure code-based generative art, NFT collecting, unique art, and wholesome fun.

Even though skull collecting is mostly about buying what you vibe with, collectors have identified and named particular traits. Some of the most popular are limebois with green backgrounds, graygang for gray skulls, and 3d glasses for red and blue eyes.

Amongst the top traits to own, 5-tier gradient eyes have become a crucial collector item — especially when combined with gray skulls. This combo is called graydient and is at its rarest when expressed with fire eyes. As Mark’s favorite trait, fire eyes represent gradient eyes transitioning from yellow to red.

Clean black and white SMOLSKULLS are the most common yet remain a collector favorite that’s best represented by The Punisher, a skull resembling the comic book antihero by the same name.

With its own channel in the fxhash discord, the SMOLSKULL community has evolved into a place to hang out with your friends and talk skulls. Tools like Mark’s FXCollectors show the community is over 750 collectors strong, which shows this is not just another PFP project.
